Partnerships
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) works with a wide range of public and private partners to accelerate development and ensure we are using resources efficiently. USAID’s partnerships promote access to voluntary family planning information and services and improve the lives of women and girls around the world.
As a founding partner of Family Planning 2020 (FP2020), USAID supports the partnership’s goal to reach 120 million more women and girls in the world’s poorest countries with access to voluntary family planning information and services by 2020. Launched at the 2012 London Summit on Family Planning, FP2020 has generated unprecedented political will and financial support to reduce unmet need for contraception.
USAID is a founding member of the Ouagadougou Partnership, a joint effort between USAID, the governments of eight francophone West African countries and other international development organizations. The Ouagadougou Partnership promotes the integration of voluntary family planning and reproductive health programs into national development plans in West Africa, a region with high rates of fertility and unmet need for contraception.
Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition
As a member of the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition (RHSC), USAID collaborates with other public, private and non-governmental organizations to ensure that people living in low and middle-income countries have access to high quality reproductive health supplies. The coalition works to reduce supply stock-outs, assist governments in achieving their reproductive health goals and improve the market for contraceptive supplies. In recent years, USAID has worked with the RHSC and pharmaceutical companies such as Merck, Bayer and Pfizer to lower drug prices for several high-demand contraceptives.
USAID and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) collaborate on several programmatic and technical initiatives related to family planning and reproductive health The USAID-UNFPA collaboration is focused in six thematic areas at the global and country levels: gender; population and development data; youth; total market approach; commodity security; and high-impact practices. USAID and UNFPA support national governments in their efforts to step up ownership and financing for their family planning programs and on their journeys to self-reliance.

Innovations in Contraceptive Technologies
USAID is part of a i public-private partnership with Department for International Development, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Pfizer and PATH to support the introduction of Sayana® Press, a new contraceptive packaged in an innovative pre-filled single-use syringe. The contraceptive’s unique delivery system makes it more portable and easier to use than other options, allowing injections to be delivered by health care workers to women at home or in other convenient settings.
Projects
MOMENTUM— or Moving Integrated, Quality Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health and Family Planning and Reproductive Health Services to Scale— is a suite of projects that aims to accelerate reductions in maternal, newborn, and child mortality and morbidity in high-burden countries by increasing host country commitment and capacity to provide high-quality, integrated health care. Through MOMENTUM, USAID will meet countries where they are on their development journey and provide the support needed to progress towards self-reliance for health.
Advancing Partners and Communities Project
The Advancing Partners and Communities Project advances and supports community-based programs seeking to improve community health, especially in relationship to family planning, by providing global leadership, small and medium-sized subawards and building technical capacity.
Central Contraceptive Procurement (CCP)
The Central Contraceptive Procurement project was instituted to ensure a steady and reliable mechanism for the supply of contraceptives for voluntary family planning programs; such as, oral contraceptive pills, implants, injectables, IUDs, CycleBeads, and emergency contraceptive pills. CCP tasks include the procurement, warehousing and freight services of contraceptives to USAID missions, as well as quality control and testing.
Combination Contraceptive and Anti-HIV Vaginal
The Combination Contraceptive and Anti-HIV Vaginal project focuses on the development of a 90-day vaginal ring that combines the recently proven HIV prevention drug, tenofovir, with the hormonal contraceptive, levonorgestrel. If shown to be safe, effective and acceptable, this combination ring would confer protection against HIV while delivering a highly effective contraceptive method, thus filling two reproductive health needs in one product.
Delivering Contraceptive Vaginal Rings Project
The Delivering Contraceptive Vaginal Rings Project will complete the development and approval of two new women-initiated contraceptive methods, the one-year Nesterone®/Ethinyl-Estradiol contraceptive vaginal ring and the three-month Progesterone Vaginal Ring.
The Demographic and Health Surveys Program (DHS-7)
The Demographic and Health Surveys Program works to improve the collection, analysis and presentation of population, health, and nutrition data which is used to facilitate planning, policymaking and program management.
Envision FP works to develop, introduce and expand the understanding of contraceptive technologies and approaches within communities in order to enhance personal choice and reduce unmet need.
E2A, supported by Pathfinder, works to increase global support for the use of evidence-based best practices in order to improve voluntary family planning and reproductive health services, access and quality.
The Evidence Project focuses on generating, translating, and using evidence to strengthen and support the scale up of evidence-informed family planning/reproductive health policies and programs.
Fertility Awareness for Community Transformation (FACT)
The FACT Project tests strategies to increase fertility awareness and expand access to fertility awareness based methods at the community level.
Gender Roles, Equality and Transformations (GREAT) Project
The GREAT Project aims to develop and test a package of evidence-based, scalable, life-stage tailored interventions to transform gender norms, reduce gender-based violence, and promote gender-equitable attitudes and reproductive health among adolescents in post-conflict communities in northern Uganda.
GHSC-PSM aims to ensure uninterrupted supplies of health commodities in order to prevent suffering, save lives and strengthen supply chain systems in low and middle-income countries.
Breakthrough ACTION is focused on strengthening in-country capacity to implement state of the art health communications, including mass media, community level activities, interpersonal communication and new media. Improved health communication strategies and add value to behavior change activities supported by USAID Missions.
Breakthrough RESEARCH catalyzes social and behavior change by conducting research and evaluation and promoting solutions to improve health and development programs around the world.
Health Policy Plus strives to promote equitable and sustainable health services, supplies, and delivery systems through policy development and implementation, emphasizing voluntary, rights-based health programs and strengthening in-country partners’ capacity.
Increasing Age of Marriage will systematically test a combination of interventions to delay marriage and track associated program costs with a view of scaling-up proven approaches.
IPM Combination Contraceptive and Anti-HIV Vaginal Ring
The IPM Combination Contraceptive and Anti-HIV Vaginal Ring project, supported by the International Partnership for Microbicide, aims to formulate a sixty-day vaginal ring that combines the potential HIV prevention drug, dapivirine, with a hormonal contraceptive.
Knowledge SUCCESS (Strengthening Use, Capacity, Collaboration, Exchange, Synthesis, and Sharing) supports learning and creates opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange within the family planning and reproductive health community.
Leadership, Management and Governance (LMG)
LMG addresses the gap for sustainable leadership, management and governance capacity at all levels of the health system. LGM uses highly effective interventions to support health care providers, program managers and policymakers to achieve improve health system performance and better health outcomes.
Passages: Transforming Social Norms for Adolescent & Youth Sexual & Reproductive Health
The Passages Project develops evidence and promotes application of effective, scalable interventions to transform social norms related to reproductive health among youth.
Policy, Advocacy and Communication Enhanced for Population and Reproductive Health (PACE)
PACE works with national and local governments, civil society organizations, development networks, and other local institutions to build capacity, design and implement effective population and family planning advocacy strategies.
Postabortion Care Family Planning (PAC-FP)
PAC-FP seeks to expand postabortion care (PAC) clients’ access to a range of contraceptive methods, including long-acting reversible contraceptives and permanent methods, along with providing immediate life-saving care.
SILCS Cervical Barrier + Tenofovir (TFV Gel)
The SILCS Cervical Barrier + Tenofovir Gel project tests the safety and effectiveness of the one-size-fits-most SILCS cervical barrier, combined with tenofovir gel, a user-initiated, non-hormonal contraceptive method that delivers protection against HIV and HSV.
Sustaining Health Outcomes through the Private Sector Plus (SHOPS Plus)
SHOPS Plus is a project that catalyzes public-private engagement to provide comprehensive health services while helping to achieve the goals of EPCMD, an, AIDS Free Generation, FP2020 and other USG priorities.
The TJ project aims to develop and test a scalable package of community-based social network activities that engage men and women in discussion and reflection to reduce social barriers to family planning and contribute to reduce unmet need.
TRANSFORM works with in-country partners to strengthen the quality of existing social and behavior change activities by introducing new practices in research and design.
US Census Bureau Interagency Agreement
The agreement with the US Census Bureau seeks to increase the quality, quantity, and utility of country-level data to support the 2020 Round of Censuses and the data requirements of SDGs. The agreement strengthens the capability of statistical offices in developing countries to collect, analyze, disseminate and use data.
