"AIDS can be prevented. Antiretroviral drugs can extend life for many years... seldom has history offered a greater opportunity to do so much for so many.” – Former President George W. Bush, 2003 State of the Union Address, announcing the creation of the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)

As a key implementer of PEPFAR, USAID’s Office of HIV/AIDS provides global leadership to maximize the impact of the Agency’s overall response to combat the epidemic. USAID supports country-led efforts to combat the complex challenges of HIV/AIDS in over 50 countries around the world.

USAID’s overall goal is to support and sustain the achievement of HIV/AIDS epidemic control across these countries by:

  1. Providing global leadership in the development of programs that maximize impact;
  2. Supporting country-led strategies while applying USAID’s broad health and development expertise and specialized HIV/AIDS technical competencies;
  3. Using science, technology, and innovation to support cost-effective, sustainable, and appropriately integrated HIV/AIDS interventions at scale.
Client Centered: Data-driven Decisions, Continuous, Convenient ART, Partner Management, Quality Management, Case Finding & Targeted Testing, Prevention Support, including PrEP, Up-to-date Policy Environment
PEPFAR, through USAID, underscores four key themes to achieve epidemic control: client-centered services, community engagement, resilient and adaptive approaches, and support for sustainable capacity
