February 9, 2018

On January 30, the USAID activity collaborated with the Vietnam Network of People Living with HIV and the Vietnam Administration for HIV/AIDS Control (VAAC) to launch a campaign promoting SHI. This included releasing a short video featuring celebrity actors (including recently crowned Miss Universe Vietnam H’Hen Nie) playing the roles of PLHIV and how they improved their quality of life by enrolling in SHI. The event was attended by over 150 people, including representatives from the local government, the USG, and representatives from PLHIV communities. U.S. Consul General Mary Tarnowka and VAAC Deputy Director General Dr. Hoang Dinh Canh gave speeches at the event.

On January 29 - February 2, USAID’s Governance for Inclusive Growth (GIG) activity and the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) hosted a consultative workshop and conducted field visits to meet with central and provincial government officials as well as businesses to obtain feedback on the current system of property registration. Input from the workshop and field visits will be used in a policy analysis report that will contribute to the development of a proposal by the MOJ to improve the legal framework on registering property.

USAID is working with the Government of Vietnam, non-governmental organizations and private sector partners to implement and strengthen the innovative Payment for Forest Environmental Services (PFES) system. On January 31, USAID’s Green Annamites project and the Vietnam Forest Protection and Development Fund consulted with more than 60 diverse stakeholders on approaches for implementing Vietnam’s recently enacted Forestry Law, which requires large emitters of greenhouse gases (GHGs) to pay fees for the carbon sequestration services provided by Vietnam's forests.

On January 26, as part of its assistance to strengthen the National Assembly’s (NA) oversight functions, USAID’s Governance for Inclusive Growth Program and the NA’s Committee for Finance and Budget Affairs trained provincial representatives and NA deputies’ support staff to improve their capacity in gender budgeting approaches.

Ten student teams from six Vietnamese engineering and technology universities recently wrapped up the 2017 BUILD-IT Coding Competition, which was sponsored by USAID under its Building University-Industry Learning and Development Through Innovation and Technology (BUILD-IT) activity. As part of the competition, teams designed technological solutions to address emerging issues such as traffic control and reduction; e-government services; health care; and leveraging open data.
