Vietnam currently has more than 120,000 HIV patients on antiretroviral therapy (ART). In less than a year, more than 53,000 of these patients will transition from externally-funded to locally-financed treatment services under social health insurance. This month, USAID’s Sustainable HIV Response from Technical Assistance (SHIFT) activity worked with 56 healthcare providers from Bac Giang and Lao Cai provinces to implement Individual Treatment Continuation Plans (ITCPs).
On January 11-12, USAID and a handful of international development partners co-sponsored Vietnam Central Economic Commission’s 2018 Vietnam Economic Forum. Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc, CEC Chairman Nguyễn Văn Bình, and former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry attended this high-level meeting and USAID/Vietnam Mission Director Michael Greene gave a keynote speech.
USAID’s Enhanced Community HIV Link Northern activity regularly organizes district and commune advocacy meetings in Dien Bien and Nghe An provinces to troubleshoot HIV efforts (including barriers to access as well as clinical issues) among government and health care staff. Earlier this month, using materials acquired from USAID’s December advocacy meeting, Thanh Chuong District of Nghe An province organized a training workshop on how to reduce HIV stigma and discrimination for 150 district and commune leaders.
Vietnam’s national stock status review and order planning process works to ensure continuous supply of ARVs to health facilities throughout the country. On December 6-8, USAID’s Global Health Supply Chain Program-Procurement and Supply Management activity collaborated with the Global Fund and the Vietnam Administration of HIV/AIDS Control to conduct a national ARV stock status review and supply planning for the first quarter of 2018.
USAID’s Governance for Inclusive Growth Program awarded a $58,524 grant in October 2017 to the Mekong Development Research Institute (MDRI) - an independent scientific research agency in Vietnam - to assist local SMEs in accessing international markets through enhanced business-to-business connectivity and improved capacity to meet the demand for goods in South East Asia. On January 5, MDRI conducted a field survey among SMEs in Hung Yen province to identify their production capacity, development needs, and difficulties encountered in reaching customers.
