The preamble to the U.S. Constitution articulates a path for the American people to “form a more perfect union.” This small phrase acknowledges a very big idea. Democracy requires a lot from its citizens. The Constitution itself helps create the basis for a more perfect union, but democracy ultimately depends on the citizens who exercise their rights and help shape their society and the government that represents them.
September 15 is an important day. In addition to celebrating International Day of Democracy, Georgia’s students will return to school. For people like Tamta Gamrekeli, a member of the USAID-supported civics club in Osiauri, the learning process is always ongoing.
“‘Active citizenship,’ ‘civic activism,’ and ‘advocacy campaign’ were terms I did not fully understand before Momavlis Taoba [USAID’s flagship civic education program in Georgia] took an active role in my life,” said Tamta.
USAID empowers young people to become leaders of democratic transformation, helping the next generation of democracy activists cultivate the skills, experiences, and networks they need to advance democracy in their communities and countries. As the world prepares to celebrate International Day of Democracy on September 15, USAID is sharing the stories of young activists who are making a difference in Georgia.
