Six years ago, Tamar was getting ready for her wedding when she decided to make her own tiara by hand. A trained doctor, Tamar has turned her hobby into a small business, “AtaBata,” creating tiaras for hundreds of brides and making a name for herself in the wedding accessory business. This year, she started making Christmas ornaments and other holiday gifts. Tamar’s business truly began to grow after she participated in the USAID YES-Georgia Program, a USAID and W-GDP-supported activity that provides young entrepreneurs with startup financing and training.

Worldwide, women entrepreneurs are an emerging market force and an important source of innovation and job creation. Yet they often do not have equal access to the capital and business networks they need. The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated how critical advancing economic opportunities for women remains – now more than ever, we need to empower women as workers and entrepreneurs.
USAID empowers young people to become leaders of democratic transformation, helping the next generation of democracy activists cultivate the skills, experiences, and networks they need to advance democracy in their communities and countries. As the world prepares to celebrate International Day of Democracy on September 15, USAID is sharing the stories of young activists who are making a difference in Georgia.
The COVID-19 pandemic has created challenges for everyone. It has also presented opportunities to reconsider pressing social issues, with USAID/Georgia using digital formats to continue the conversation on women’s empowerment.
USAID empowers women and girls to participate fully in Georgia’s democratic, social, and economic development. Recognizing that the language we use affects the way we think and impacts how we treat women, the USAID Promoting Rule of Law in Georgia (PROLoG) program partnered with the Government of Georgia’s Human Rights Council to call on Georgia’s youth to “Change Oppressive Sayings Regarding Women.”
