Vietnam is now globally-recognized for its impressive response to the COVID-19 pandemic, with fewer than 400 confirmed cases in six months (only 106 of which were transmitted in Vietnam) and zero deaths since the first case arrived from China on January 23. Key elements included strong and consistent national leadership; strict border controls; aggressive case-finding and isolation; determined contact-tracing and quarantine even to three degrees of separation; availability and scale-up of quality laboratory testing; and transparent and frequent public communication. Such strong rapid response was possible only because the country systems and public health and clinical workers were well-prepared.

The United States government, through the U.S. State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has allocated more than $36.7 million to help the people of Afghanistan address the COVID-19 pandemic, and expedited $90 million in continued development assistance through the World Bank to support Afghanistan’s national health and education sectors and local government needs.

On July 23, 2020, U.S. Ambassador Earl Miller visited and interacted with families in Kalyanpur Bosti receiving food assistance through a new U.S. government program funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).  Ambassador Miller, joined by Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Md. Atiqul Islam, observed program staff preparing food baskets for delivery and spoke with people purchasing fresh vegetables at a local shop using the program’s cash transfers.

The reality on the ground is that nearly one-third of households in South Africa do not have access to adequate handwashing facilities. To help address this critical need, the United States government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has committed R8.6 million ($500,000) to UNICEF to build much-needed handwashing stations within public spaces in communities that lack access to running water, such as health care facilities, schools, transport hubs, and markets.

In the current context of the pandemic caused by COVID-19, all the students of the world have been affected due to the temporary closure of their schools, which demands an effort from the authorities and from society in general to promote the continuity of the learning of children and adolescents. In view of this situation, the Government of Peru established the I Learn at Home (Aprendo en Casa) Education Program.
