America Acts: Leading the global fight against COVID-19

When a global health need arises, America doesn't wait to be called; it responds with continual aid and support.

For more than half a century, the United States has been the largest contributor to global health security and humanitarian assistance. We are on the frontlines in the fight against Ebola. We support countries in the battles against HIV/AIDs, tuberculosis, and malaria. And now we are providing immediate assistance in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The United States of America has made available more than $20.5 billion to combat COVID-19. This commitment demonstrates U.S. leadership in response to the outbreak and helps continue America's strong tradition of supporting public health around the world. Along with the U.S. private sector, the American people continue to lead in responding to this pandemic.

USAID is doing our part in supporting the American response to the COVID-19 pandemic with decisive action at home and abroad. Our priorities in the response are to protect the safety and health security of our global workforce, ensure that we can continue our life-saving mission across the world, and support partner countries in their response to COVID-19.

Across the globe, USAID is supporting countries affected by COVID-19. We are working directly with governments, multilateral organizations, NGOs, the private sector, and other organizations responding on the ground to combat the dangerous pathogen. Since the start of the outbreak, USAID and the State Department have committed more than $1.6 billion in health, humanitarian, economic, and development assistance specifically aimed at fighting the pandemic. This funding, provided by Congress, is helping to save lives by improving public health education; protecting healthcare facilities; and increasing laboratory, disease-surveillance, and rapid- response capacity in more than 120 countries.

An infectious-disease threat anywhere can be a threat everywhere. Investments in global health protect Americans and the global community. USAID has been a leader in global health for decades, and we will stand by people everywhere during a time of crisis.
