New Humanitarian and Health Assistance Bolsters U.S. Leadership in Response to COVID-19

The Department of State and USAID are providing an additional $208 million in new humanitarian and health assistance to bolster our ongoing response efforts, helping the world’s most vulnerable overcome the devastation inflicted by this deadly virus. With today’s announcement, the State Department and USAID alone have committed more than $1.5 billion for the global COVID-19 response since the outbreak began.

In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis in Yemen, the Umm Al Banat Art Center for Women’s Training faced a serious dilemma—adapt or go out of business. The center is a women-led social enterprise located in Khore Makser, Aden that previously specialized in manufacturing clothing. With the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic, however, demand for its products sank and sales plummeted. At the same time, demand for personal protective equipment (PPE) and hospital-grade clothing took off rapidly, offering Umm Al Banat an opportunity to realign its production and re-launch itself as a profitable business.

USAID supported the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce to conduct a new business survey on the key strategic insights on trade and labor market impacts of COVID-19 in Sri Lanka. The survey was conducted among senior-level executives of large firms and SMEs (including firms owned or led by women) in 26 export segments from 04 -18 May 2020.

The donation is thanks to a collaborative effort between the United States Africa Command, which provided the funds to buy the locally-made face coverings, the Madagascar Ministry of Public Health, which identified the areas for the face coverings to be delivered, and USAID Madagascar, whose IMPACT health project operated by PSI Madagascar arranged for the delivery of the protective equipment via the Regional Directorates of Health to the front-line workers.  The donation in Moramanga was also supported by staff from the USAID RANO WASH project
