Large-scale infectious disease emergencies have disastrous impacts on families, societies, systems, and economies. Major outbreaks in recent years, especially the current COVID-19 outbreak (first identified in Wuhan, China) continued to demonstrate that governments, donors, and aid agencies are critically challenged in their response capacity and coordination, highlighting gaps in the global humanitarian community’s ability to respond to major infectious disease outbreaks.

Haymond (right) at a ceremony in Vientiane today as part of the United States’ early assistance to Lao PDR to prepare for any potential spread of the novel coronavirus.

U.S. Ambassador to Lao PDR, Dr. Peter M. Haymond handed over personal protective equipment to Dr. Phouthone Muoangpak, Vice Minister of Health, at a ceremony in Vientiane today as part of the United States’ early assistance to Lao PDR to prepare for any potential spread of the novel coronavirus.

This week the State Department has facilitated the transportation of nearly 17.8 tons of donated medical supplies to the Chinese people, including masks, gowns, gauze, respirators, and other vital materials.  These donations are a testament to the generosity of the American people.
