USAID supports the human rights of LGBTI people both through the integration of inclusion and nondiscrimination principles into our policies and programming, and through programs that specifically address anti-LGBTI violence, discrimination, stigma, and criminalization. USAID’s approach includes 1) data collection/research to influence policy, 2) social/behavior change communications to reduce stigma, 3) country-level projects to respond to real-time needs particularly in the “most difficult” contexts, and 4) emergency response. 

Programmatic Examples

USAID supports and manages a variety of regional programs and global public private partnerships that leverage financial and technical contributions from multiple third parties including the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and private sector entities.  Additionally, through USAID’s Human Rights Grants Program, we respond to urgent or unanticipated human rights challenges, including those related to violence and discrimination faced by LGBTI people. The goal of these programs is to help protect LGBTI people from violence, discrimination, stigma, and criminalization.  Together, these programs work in countries in all regions where USAID operates.
