Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) keeps couples living with HIV in Vietnam strong

Chung and Minh* met when Chung was volunteering with HIV prevention activities in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and Minh was looking for more support to properly adhere to his HIV antiretroviral therapy regimen.  Chung was happy to help, and before long they became a couple. Chung maintains that their love is so strong that Minh’s HIV status doesn’t change things, but when the pair learned about oral pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV (PrEP), they jumped at the opportunity to add an extra layer of protection along with practicing safe sex and using a condom. One year ago, this would not have been possible.

Community-based Organizations (CBOs) in Ho Chi Minh City Develop Business Strategies in the Wake of Declining Donor Funds for HIV/AIDS Response

As Vietnam transitions from donor-funded to locally-supported HIV/AIDS activities in Vietnam, CBOs will find it challenging to maintain community-based HIV prevention, care and support services to men who have sex with men, transgender women and people living with HIV. In response, last week, USAID’s Enhanced Community HIV Link - Southern activity in collaboration with Life Centre, a Ho Chi Minh City based NGO, trained 17 CBOs in Ho Chi Minh City to professionalize their services.

Nghe An and Dien Bien Provinces Achieve Methadone Treatment Services Sustainability Milestone

Methadone Maintenance Therapy (MMT) refers to the use of methadone to treat opioid addiction (such a heroin) when detoxification has been unsuccessful. Since 2015, USAID’s Sustainable HIV Response from Technical Assistance (SHIFT) activity has made significant strides in convincing local authorities to scale up MMT as a cost effective, evidence-based, and humane means to prevent HIV transmission and treat drug abuse.

USAID Encourages Vietnamese Media to Highlight the Important Role of Community Based Organizations (CBOs) in the Country’s HIV Response

Earlier this month, USAID’s Enhanced Community HIV Link – Northern activity collaborated with PEPFAR to train 41 national and provincial news agency reporters in Nghe An and Dien Bien provinces. The training highlighted updated knowledge about HIV/AIDS programing in Vietnam; ethics in HIV communication; stigma and discrimination faced by people living with HIV (PLHIV); and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues.
