April 12, 2018

On April 6, with support USAID’s Disability Rights Enforcement Coordination and Therapy (DIRECT) activity, the General Hospital of Binh Phuoc province officially opened its first ever rehabilitation unit and occupational therapy lab. Equipped with modern facilities and well-trained staff, the new unit can provide persons with disabilities with both physical and occupational therapies. In addition to USAID’s support, Binh Phuoc’s business community contributed roughly $12,000 to help establish the new unit.

On March 30, Vietnam’s Vice Minister of Industry and Trade Hoang Quoc Vuong joined U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Bureau of Energy Resources Sandra Oudkirk and U.S Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel Kritenbrink to co-chair the first Vietnam-US Energy Security Dialogue in Hanoi. Government representatives and technical experts from both countries exchanged views on the challenges and opportunities to strengthen energy security and sustainable economic growth in Vietnam.

Spina Bifida is a birth defect that occurs when the spine and spinal cord do not form properly. It often leads to paralysis and deformities of the lower limbs and is often not properly diagnosed in Vietnam. Seeking to improve the specific knowledge and skills of medical and rehabilitation professionals, USAID’s Humanity and Inclusion activity helped develop Vietnam’s Rehabilitation Guidelines and launched a continuing medical education campaign targeting medical and rehabilitation service providers.

Over the last three years, USAID’s Health Finance & Governance (HFG) activity has provided technical assistance to the Vietnamese government to help them forecast revenue and expenditure for the country’s Social Health Insurance (SHI) fund. SHI will become the primary source for HIV/AIDS care and treatment.

USAID’s Vietnam Low Emission Energy Program (V-LEEP) is working closely with Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade to pilot the DPPA mechanism in 2018. On March 20, USAID organized a workshop in Ho Chi Minh City to discuss pros and cons of how such an agreement might be structured.  It was attended by 19 established international investors from Vietnam and around the region. The experts identified potential challenges in introducing DPPAs in Vietnam’s energy market.
