On August 28, Acting USAID/Vietnam Mission Director Craig Hart officially launched Phase III of the Chi Campaign, a social marketing initiative, to reduce rhino horn consumption in the country.  Through the campaign, USAID Wildlife Asia is partnering with TRAFFIC in Vietnam, a globally recognized leader in combating wildlife trafficking and innovator in the field of behavior change communication for conservation. The Chi Campaign applies targeted social marketing principles, messaging, and approaches to tackle rhino horn consumption driven by social status.

On August 29, USAID, in partnership with the Vietnam Institute of Economics/Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, hosted its Third Annual Learning Symposium. It was attended by over 160 participants representing non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, universities, Government of Vietnam agencies, and international donors. This year’s theme was “Vietnam’s Engines of Sustainable and Inclusive Economic Growth: Using Evidence to Inform Policies and Projects.” Sixteen speakers and panelists shared their knowledge and research for driving sustainable and inclusive growth in Vietnam, focusing on a path to growth that protects the environment; produces a more inclusive labor force; and is fueled by science, technology, and innovation.

USAID is helping local organizations strengthen their capacity to apply for, receive and manage funding from USAID and other donors. As part of its ongoing efforts to build their capacity, on August 22-24, USAID conducted the “Human Resource Management” (HRM) training for 27 participants from 10 local organizations.

USAID’s Vietnam Low Emission Energy Program (V-LEEP) is working with Vietnam’s private sector to accelerate clean energy development and increase adoption of energy efficient solutions . On August 27, the program signed a letter of support with T&T Group,  a Vietnamese private firm, to help it develop its first solar power project in Ninh Thuan province.

Viral suppression is a key indicator of HIV treatment effectiveness. When an HIV patient achieves viral suppression, s/he has a significantly reduced likelihood of transmitting the infection and has improved health outcomes as an individual. From April to June, 22 clinics in eight provinces supported by USAID’s Sustainable HIV Response from Technical Assistance (SHIFT) Project completed 2,583 viral load tests with an overall viral suppression rate of 95.6%, marking the second quarter that project-supported provinces exceeded the 95% target needed to achieve HIV epidemic control.
