Vietnam will become the Chair of the Asian Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (ASOSAI) for the 2018-2021 period, which will put the country’s auditing capacity in the spotlight. In addition, public sector performance auditing capacity is currently limited in Vietnam, particularly on environmental issues.

There is a lack of capacity in Vietnam to design, evaluate, and implement policies on science and technology. The Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA) is the umbrella organization under which many of USAID/Vietnam’s implementing partners are registered - specifically local organizations working on disabilities and HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. To improve their capacity on developing policies related to science and technology, on August 8-10, USAID conducted a training “Policy Research Project Design and Management” in Hanoi. It was attended by 24 VUSTA representatives and was designed to strengthen the participants’ ability to design and manage high-quality, policy-relevant science and technology research projects. These VUSTA trainers will share their increased knowledge with VUSTA’s broader membership of more than 300 associations.

In Vietnam’s Central Annamites region, thousands of rural households depend on forest resources to supplement their livelihoods. USAID’s Green Annamites project has teamed up with Nhat Tan - a private Vietnamese firm that markets sustainable handicrafts throughout the country. USAID and Nhat Tan will conduct a two-month training on sustainable handicraft production for 120 women in Phu Ninh, Thang Binh and Que Son districts.

The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has started a global initiative to roll out the fixed-dose combination of tenofovir, lamivudine, and dolutegravir (TLD) - the first affordable, generic single-pill HIV treatment - in developing countries. To implement this initiative in Vietnam, on August 1-7, USAID’s Global Health Supply Chain Program-Procurement and Supply Management project worked with the Vietnam Administration of HIV/AIDS Control (VAAC) to develop a transition roadmap leading up to the arrival of the first PEPFAR-funded TLD in July 2019. The roadmap includes input by Vietnamese government representatives, USAID and other PEPFAR partners, WHO, the Global Fund, and clinical experts.
