Dushanbe, Tajikistan, December 29, 2020 – The U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe, through its new U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission, provided to the Ministry of Health and Social Protection the first delivery of equipment associated with a $2.6 million program to support the provision of medical oxygen for patients battling COVID-19 in Tajikistan.  This oxygen support program adds to almost $5 million of medical assistance the U.S. government has already provided to Tajikistan to combat COVID-19 throughout 2020.

Acting USAID Tajikistan Mission Director Keith Simmons handed over 200 medical oxygen cylinders to the First Deputy Minister of Health and Social Protection of the Population Gafur Mukhsinzoda during a ceremony on December 29.  Tajikistan is among 11 countries to receive oxygen assistance from the U.S. government, which totals $18 million dollars globally.

USAID and the National Center or Healthy Lifestyles Promotion Conduct Training for Journalists on Tuberculosis Reporting

Internews and ARGO Address Social Needs through New Technologies

Nurali Saidov, Secretary-Coordinator of the Public Council of the Republic of Tajikistan and United States Ambassador to Tajikistan Elisabeth Millard opened a three-day Media and Social Innovation Lab in Dushanbe today. Organized jointly by the Media Academy of Tajikistan, NGO Fidokor of Tajikistan, Internews in Central Asia, and the Association for Civil Society Development (ARGO) of Kazakhstan, this event brought together more than 90 experts, representatives of media, civil society organizations (CSOs) and IT specialists from Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan to collaborate on online tools and mobile applications to support local media, social, economic, and environmental initiatives to enhance citizens’ access to information.

U.S. Government Delivers Clean Drinking Water to Homes in Norak District

U.S. Ambassador Elisabeth Millard and First Deputy Chairman of Norak, Mr. Asozoda Dilshod Alimurod celebrated the opening of a new drinking water system in Daldakhuron village of Norak district. USAID representatives, district and municipality officials, village leaders, and residents also participated in the ceremony. The system provides 353 residents with clean drinking water.

"Unite to End Tuberculosis" - A National Campaign Dedicated to World Tuberculosis Day

At the national 2017 World Tuberculosis (TB) Day event, U.S. Chargé d'affaires Leslie Hayden and the Deputy Minister of Health and Social Protection of the Population of the Republic of Tajikistan Aziz Abdusattor Odinazoda remarked on the significant progress made toward controlling TB in Tajikistan, while acknowledging that challenges remain.  Tajikistan still has very high rates of multi-drug resistant TB, which poses a formidable challenge for TB control.

U.S. Government Opens a Commercial Greenhouse to Support Improved Agriculture and Nutrition

U.S. Government launches new Feed the Future program to support land reform efforts

U.S. Ambassador Elisabeth Millard attended a launch ceremony for the new $9.7 million Feed the Future Tajikistan Land Market Development Activity Project. The ceremony was also attended by key stakeholders and other counterparts who make significant contributions to promote land use rights, including Rajabboy Ahmadzoda, Chairman of State Committee for Land Management and Geodesy of the Republic of Tajikistan, as well as representatives from Parliament and the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, and the U.S. Embassy. The project will continue through August 2020.

U.S. Government Introduces New Drug to Help Save Lives of Tuberculosis Patients

Acting Deputy Chief of Mission of the United States to Tajikistan Lucy Jilka joined the First Deputy Minister of Health and Social Protection of Population of the Republic of Tajikistan Umarzoda Saida Gayrat, national health leadership, physicians, TB doctors, and stakeholders to celebrate the introduction of bedaquiline to Tajikistan. This is the first new drug approved for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB) since the 1960s. U.S. company Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, created bedaquiline to treat drug-resistant tuberculosis and protect public health.  Janssen is donating 30,000 courses of this life-saving new TB drug to qualified countries.  The United States, through USAID’s Office of Global Health, is partnering with Janssen to introduce bedaquiline in Tajikistan.

U. S. Government Supports Literacy in Tajikistan

U.S. Ambassador Elisabeth Millard joined Deputy Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Tajikistan Latofat Naziri, local education officials, teachers, and education stakeholders at the joint Ministry and USAID Quality Reading Project presentation of the 2016 Early Grade Reading Assessment midterm findings. The baseline data was presented in December 2014.
