Today, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) officially launched the Civil Society Support Program in Central Asia, which will be implemented by Eurasia Foundation (www.eurasia.org). The five-year, $18 million initiative will support citizens of Central Asia to cultivate a vibrant and responsive civil society throughout the region and strengthen a new generation of leaders in the sector.
Today, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Committee of Tourism Development of the Republic of Tajikistan celebrated the installation of road signs to help connect tourists to important cultural and historical sites in Tajikistan. As Tajikistan seeks to expand its tourism industry, it is important to help tourists find Tajikistan’s many natural, cultural, and historical attractions.
Today, USAID’s Smart Waters project convened water sector national partners from five Central Asian countries and Afghanistan for the eighth Regional Steering Committee for water coordination in Burabay, Kazakhstan. The meeting facilitated the exchange of information and ideas among participating countries and the sharing of national best practices at a regional level.
The United States joins Tajikistan in observing World AIDS Day 2019. Since 2003, the U.S. government has partnered with Tajikistan through the President’s Emergency Plan for HIV/AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), contributing $21.5 million in USAID programs aimed at eliminating the disease in Tajikistan. Two U.S. agencies implement these programs in Tajikistan – the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). PEPFAR’s life-saving work is made possible through the U.S. government’s unwavering commitment to the end the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the American people’s compassion and generosity.
USAID and the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population officially launched two new projects:
A five-year - USAID Eliminating Tuberculosis in Central Asia (ETICA) Activity and a grant awarded to the World Health Organization (WHO) to “Improved Prevention, Detection, and Treatment of DR-TB in Central Asia.”
The Central Asia Trade Forum, the region’s flagship international event for companies and exporters, opened today in Shymkent, Kazakhstan. Over 500 leaders from government, business and civil society from Central and South Asia, Europe, and the United States gathered to explore investment and innovation in horticulture across the region.
The United States Embassy, together with the Ministry of Agriculture, government representatives of Khatlon Province hosted an event to celebrate the accomplishments of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Feed the Future Tajikistan Agriculture and Water Activity over the last four years. The event highlighted U.S. government contributions to increase, diversify, and add value to the production, post-harvest handling, and processing of agricultural products in an effort to address malnutrition and market surplus production in southwestern Tajikistan.
In recognition of International Literacy Day, the United States Ambassador to Tajikistan, John Mark Pommersheim, joined Deputy Minister of Education and Science Fathiddin Usmonzoda, local authorities, education officials, teachers, and students to celebrate this global event in Varzob district. International Literacy Day events are being held across the country as part of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) primary grade literacy program in Tajikistan.
Over the past three days, more than 150 media professionals from across Central Asia convened at the first Central Asia Media Festival “MediaCAMP Fest” in Dushanbe. “MediaCAMP Fest” provided a professional platform for journalists from Central Asia to network, share their experiences and ideas, and discuss the most pressing questions and challenges for media in the region. The Internews Network, with support from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), organized the event.
