Sante Fruit, a relatively new and successful berry company, decided to give 20 young Kosovo graduates an opportunity for hands-on learning.  The idea to involve students at the USAID-supported berry farm originated with recent graduate, Verina Krasniqi, who had just joined the company a few months ago as a young agronomist.  She observed that many growers need help with daily or seasonal farm work.  Meanwhile, she knew that agriculture students are always seeking an opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge from their studies into practice.

The public sector in Kosovo continues to show its commitment to serving citizens by continuing their operations during the global pandemic.  Since the introduction of measures in mid-March to contain the spread of COVID-19, central and municipal governments have been rotating between working in the office and working remotely.  Despite these challenges in operations, two USAID partner municipalities, Pristina and Gračanica/Graçanicë, began the first legalizations for unpermitted constructions during this period.  To date, they have completed the legalization of 108 buildings, 95 in Pristina

Women-owned businesses gathered virtually to discuss the challenges and opportunities in the time of COVID-19.  Working from home, while also managing a household, including for some as mothers and wives, has been particularly difficult for women in business.  In addition to the three panelists and the female moderator, more than 30 online viewers joined the virtual roundtable organized by the American Chamber of Commerce and the USAID Commercial Justice Activity.

United States Secretary of State Pompeo announced a new State Department and USAID assistance package to combat COVID-19 globally.  This new assistance package supports Kosovo’s pandemic response with an additional $500,000.  To date, the American people have committed nearly $1.6 million to help Kosovo fight COVID-19.

A discussion between women members of parliament (MPs) from Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Albania inspires a Kosovo MP to take action.  On April 27, the National Democratic Institute (NDI), a USAID partner, organized a virtual meeting of women MPs to discuss the pandemic and its impact on women and other vulnerable groups.  Kosovo MP Valdete Idrizi joined women MPs from the three countries in sharing views on the various approaches and measures introduced in their individual countries.
