On February 1st Ambassador Delawie spoke at the launch of a new partnership between USAID/Kosovo and Gjirafa, the largest Albanian-language online search engine.
The Gjirafa team has been working to create a technology incubator that will facilitate the development of the regional internet economy and drive innovation and economic growth in Kosovo. Toward that end, Gjirafa’s stakeholders and investors are working together to invest in high-potential companies, startups, projects and innovative ideas and technologies.
On February 7th, USAID/Kosovo Deputy Mission Director Mike de la Rosa participated in a certification ceremony for public procurement officials in Kosovo. Procurement officials from all 38 of Kosovo’s municipalities, as well as various Kosovo ministries, agencies, and publicly-owned enterprises participated in the training held from September - November 2016. In total, more than 400 officials participated.
A one-day International Forum held in Tirana, Albania on January 31st assessed the progress of market reforms and market integration among countries in the region. The forum -- "Albania Power Exchange as Part of the Liberalization Policies and Integration in the Regional Market of Energy" -- was organized by the Albanian Ministry for Energy and Industry and the Albanian Association of Industry and Energy.
On January 31st, some 21interns in northern Kosovo received certificates of completion for a three-month internship in the wood-processing sector. In total, 61 individuals, including 21 (nine women) from north Kosovo were placed in three-month internships with 15 companies. The internships were in the areas of production operations management, sales and marketing, and business administration. Of the 21 interns placed in the north, seven have already found employment with the Fontana Company.
Four grant agreements signed in last three months between USAID EMPOWER Private Sector, in partnership with Swedish Agency for International Development (SIDA) and four businesses, are expected to create new employment opportunities, many of which will be filled by women and youth. USAID is complementing companies’ own investment in expanding production facilities, upgrading technologies, and installing new production lines.
