The Safeguarding Democratic Space in Kenya (SADES-K) activity partners with government institutions, civil society organizations (CSOs), and the media to strengthen the country’s governance reform agenda and secure democratic gains enshrined in the 2010 Constitution. SADES-K has three main objectives: strengthen social and ethnic cohesion; protect civic and democratic space; and conduct regular monitoring of the Building Bridges to Unity Initiative’s (BBI) national dialogue implementation process and outcomes.
With the adoption of the 2010 Constitution, Kenya set itself on a path toward devolution—a new system of governance that includes 47 county governments with governors and legislatures. The Agile Harmonized Assistance for Devolved Institutions (AHADI) is to support Kenya’s vision of devolution. AHADI aims to promote governance systems that are transparent, accountable, effective in service delivery, and responsive to empowered citizens by working at national and county government levels.
NIWETU improves the capabilities of communities and government to identify and respond to violent extremism threats in Kenya. Kenya NiWajibu Wetu is a Kiswahili phrase that translates to “Kenya is Our Responsibility”. NIWETU’s technical approach is grounded in Kenya’s National Strategy to Counter Violent Extremism. It finds inspiration in the Kenyan National Anthem and Constitution of Kenya (2010) Bill of Rights, which encourages action and partnership between communities and government in the pursuit of national security.
The Feed the Future Kenya Investment Mechanism (KIM) program is a five-year USAID project that is unlocking $400 million in investment for key sectors of Kenya’s economy, including agriculture, and for regional trade and investment opportunities under the Prosper Africa initiative.
