The 2010 Constitution of Kenya is a turning point in country’s history as it reconfigured balance of power by devolving power and responsibilities from the national government to 47 elected county governments. It also recalibrated the powers between executive, legislative and judicial branches.
The Kenya Resilient Arid Lands Partnership for Integrated Development (Kenya RAPID) program brings together public and private institutions and communities with the goals of increasing access to water and sanitation for people and water for livestock, and rebuilding a healthy rangeland-management ecosystem.
About 75 percent of Kenyans derive all or part of their livelihoods from agriculture, which accounts for 27 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) and the poverty level, is nearly 50 percent. The United States Government Feed the Future initiative in Kenya is helping smallholder farmers and their families escape the cycle of poverty.
Kenya is classified among the most water scarce countries in the world. This fact, coupled with more frequent cycles of severe weather and depleting natural resources, is making water less available for agricultural and domestic use, especially in the country’s arid and semi-arid regions.
Feed the Future’s Accelerated Value Chain Development (AVCD) activity aims to sustainably reduce poverty and hunger in 15 counties in Kenya. AVCD targets to transition 326,000 households from subsistence to market-oriented farming and into food and income security. The program focuses on livestock, dairy and staple crop (root crops and drought-tolerant crops) value chains which have been prioritized as commodities key to inclusive agricultural growth.
