USAID delivered ventilators to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa. The US has pledged to deliver 1,000 ventilators in solidarity with South Africa. With USAID support, Venezuelan doctors who fled their country validated their professional degrees with the Peruvian medical college. They are now joining the COVID-19 response efforts. Ambassador Richard Bell, USAID, and the National Democratic Institute of Côte d'Ivoire organized a workshop on preventing violent extremism through inter-religious dialogue. USAID launched Momentum 1, a 5-year award of up to $200 million. The global program addresses impacts on the health of women, newborns, and children mortality and morbidity.

President Trump sent a message for the Global Vaccine Summit in London, as the U.S. announced $1.16 billion to GAVI over 4 years. It's the USG's largest-ever contribution to GAVI. In anticipation for hurricane season, USAID is stockpiling emergency food supplies in Texas and Haiti to respond swiftly when a disaster hits. USAID-funded polymerase chain reaction machines arrived in Laos, which will be essential for the accurate diagnosis of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. A second delivery of 150 ventilators arrived to help the people of Russia during their time of crisis.

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele was on site at a local ICU to accept 250 ventilators delivered by USAID as part of the COVID-19 response efforts. In Ethiopia, USAID is sharing COVID-19 prevention information audio messages to rural communities. In its first year, the W-GDP Fund at USAID made investments in 14 countries and collaborated with nearly 250 partners to amplify its impact. In Colombia, USAID is promoting good hygiene practices at the border with Venezuela as part of COVID-19 response efforts.

The U.S. is providing COVID-19 programming and resources to people in need worldwide. This donation of ventilators will help Salvadoran people in their time of need. Another donation of ventilators arrived in Russia this week. USAID is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic in Ethiopia by educating locals on how to prevent the spread of the virus. USAID launched the Financing Self-Reliance Dashboard, a tool for assessing a country's ability to finance their own development.

May 15, 2020

A shipment of ventilators from the American people sent to South Africa to help in their COVID-19 response. Acting Administrator Barsa joined the host of Cubanos por el Mundo, Alex Otaola, to counter the Cuban regime's disinformation and show support for the Cuban citizens during the pandemic. USAID is providing emergency shelter and support to 40,000 Burundi citizens affected by the recent flood. USAID is supporting women in Nigeria in their effort to produce face masks to help protect people from COVID-19.
