This week, USAID celebrated its 59th Anniversary. We are proud of our long history of supporting countries on their journeys to self-reliance. USAID is partnering with U.S. apparel & footwear companies. This will help garment industry workers affected by COVID-19 in South East Asia. USAID announced $60 million in humanitarian assistance to respond to severe flooding in Sudan. On Tuesday, USAID celebrated One Health Day, recognizing the interconnectivity between environmental, animal & human health.
Acting Administrator Barsa rolled out the Over the Horizon strategic review on how USAID is preparing for a world altered by COVID-19. Administrator Barsa spoke at the Hudson Institute on supporting freedom of religion worldwide. On October 24th USAID commemorated World Polio Day. Wild polio cases have been reduced by 99.9% since 1998. USAID delivered 100 ventilators to Bangladesh to help the country fight COVID-19.
USAID is providing immediate humanitarian aid in response to the severe flooding in Vietnam and Cambodia. In Madagascar, USAID is working with the United Nations to provide life-saving treatment for 64,000 malnourished children. During her trip to Estonia, Deputy Administrator Glick met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Reinsalu and discussed expanding partnerships in the digital sector. USAID provided $100K to support our local partners in Bolivia that are responding to dangerous wildfires in the country. USAID and the IDB announced $2 million in new awards to support Venezuelans with employment, financial services, and access to information.
Congratulations to the World Food Programme for winning the Nobel Peace Prize. USAID is proud to partner with WFP to help end hunger. This week we celebrated Global Handwashing Day. USAID supports partner countries as they improve water, sanitation, & hygeine access to protect against diseases like COVID-19. USAID Deputy Administrator Glick and FCC Chairman Ajit Pai signed an MoU on coordination around 5G broadband. USAID announced a new partnership with the global sanitation company LIXIL to extend market-based solutions to improve sanitation and hygeine in underserved and vulnerable communities around the world.
During Acting Administrator Barsa's visit to Kenya, USAID provided 200 ventilators to help fight COVID-19. In Nairobi, he met with governors to discuss opportunities for the U.S. and Kenyan private sector. USAID is providing an additional $22.8 million into its 5-year agreement with the Ministry of International Cooperation in Egypt to improve the investment environment and empower women to join the labor force. Healthcare workers in Egypt are ready to treat patients with ventilators donated by USAID. Deputy Administrator Glick met with Embassy of Japan Minister Sadia to discuss 5G, Quad Relations, and partnering in developing countries with USAID.
