While the Government of Vietnam made great strides in 2019 by issuing a policy (Resolution No. 02/NQ-CP) to improve the business environment and enhance national competitiveness, they are still facing challenges in policy implementation. To address this, on July 17, the USAID Linkages for Small and Medium Enterprises project and the Central Institute for Economic Management held a conference on “Engaging Enterprises and Proposing Recommendations to Improve the Business Environment” to review the resolution’s implementation to date.

On July 10, at the headquarters of Vietnam's Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), MOET Vice Minister Nguyễn Văn Phúc signed the agreement which was witnessed by U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel J. Kritenbrink and other distinguished guests. Under this agreement, Peace Corps Volunteers will teach English at rural secondary schools in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.  This program launch has taken more than 20 years to negotiate and is yet another concrete example of the United States' steadfast commitment to bolstering Vietnam’s English language learning capacity, a crucial skill for any globally connected economy.

This year’s International AIDS Conference, the world’s largest conference on HIV, took place virtually for the first time from July 6-10 with a focus on the links between HIV and the COVID-19 pandemic and was attended by delegates from 175 countries. USAID’s Healthy Markets project delivered nine presentations, highlighting how it helped Vietnam ensure people living with or affected by HIV continued to receive support and care throughout the COVID-19 pandemic by leveraging virtual platforms and public-private partnerships to provide innovations and client-focused tools beyond traditional health facilities and clinics. In addition, USAID’s Enhanced Community HIV Link - Southern project gave a presentation about its community public partnership model, which links community-based organizations (CBOs) and public facilities to promote client-centered care for HIV case management.

Research indicates that people with disabilities, especially children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs), are more vulnerable to gender-based discrimination and violence. As a result, they face negative health consequences and barriers to access rehabilitation services and treatment compliance. On June 4-5,  USAID’s I-Thrive project, which supports interdisciplinary rehabilitation for children with IDDs, provided a training on gender sensitivity and gender-based violence prevention in the context of rehabilitation services for 44 participants of the 12-month occupational therapy (OT) course at the Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

In order to support Vietnam's transition from donor supported HIV treatment services to SHI, USAID’s Sustainable Financing for HIV project has been providing technical assistance through training workshops, on-site visits, and technical meetings. Recently, the project helped the Ho Chi Minh City Centre for Disease Control (HCDC) to develop an online SHI Q&A module on HCDC's website. Launched in June, this tool categorizes and systematizes questions and issues related to HIV examination and reimbursement under SHI into different topics, and provides answers and recommendations.
