The focus of the activity is to scale the impacts of USAID’s resilience programming through local systems. The activity is implemented by ACDI/VOCA, in close collaboration with Frontier Counties Development Council (FCDC) and is supported by an investment manager and select financial institution partners. USAID Kuza is implemented under the Feed the Future Kenya Livestock Market Systems Activity (LMS) award as an Associate Award 4 and supports economic opportunities in Northern Kenya.

Resilience Measurement of Market Systems in Kenya (RMS-Kenya) uses USAID’s market systems resilience framework to identify and strengthen the capability of market systems to respond to shocks and stresses. A market system is “a dynamic space that incorporates resources, roles, relationships, rules, and results. In this space, private and public actors collaborate, coordinate, and compete for the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services.”
USAID is proud and excited to announce that the work done by six of its implementing partners during the COVID-19 pandemic was recognized as PEPFAR Heroes. The award recipients were honored on December 2 during a virtual World AIDS Day celebration with the U.S. Ambassador to Kenya Kyle McCarter. The PEPFAR Hero Awards were given out by PEPFAR Kenya in recognition of people who, despite the pandemic, went above and beyond their call of duty to ensure that Kenyans living with HIV continued to receive antiretroviral therapy. Antiretroviral therapy is essential for people living with HIV to live longer, healthier lives, and maintain virologic suppression.
Lore, as he prefers to be called, was born HIV-positive. After his mother’s death, his older sister - ill of the same disease - raised him until she too died. She left him under the care of other siblings. Lore fell seriously ill at the age of 10 and tested positive for HIV. But his family was reluctant to inform him about his status, fearing the stigma he would be subjected to in school. After his schoolmates found his antiretroviral medication, they labeled him “the HIV boy.” “I almost quit school,” says Lore.
This is the latest handover of ventilators as part of the United States’ promised donation of 200 ventilators throughout Kenya. The 200 ventilators are all being given directly to hospitals in need of lifesaving equipment. Prior to receiving the ventilators, the United States provided training for medical personnel on how to properly use and store them. When complete, the donation will supply much needed aid to hospitals throughout the country to help Kenyans struggling with COVID-19.
