On November 12, Power Africa and Africa50 signed a memorandum of understanding for a new partnership focused on attracting power sector financing and developing innovative public private partnership models in sub-Saharan Africa. Africa50 will be the nineteenth development partner to join the Power Africa initiative. This new partnership between Power Africa and Africa50 provides a foundation for collaboration in the energy sector at the country and regional level throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
On August 28, the US Government (USG) and the Government of Japan (GOJ) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) to expand U.S.-Japan energy cooperation in sub-Saharan Africa through the Japan-United States Strategic Energy Partnership (JUSEP) and renew each country’s commitment to reducing energy poverty and increasing access to sustainable energy in Africa. The signing took place at the Seventh International Conference on African Development (TICAD 7) and was signed by Power Africa Coordinator Andrew Herscowitz and Ambassador Masahiko Kiya, Deputy Director-General of African Affairs Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
LUSAKA — The President of the Republic of Zambia, His Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu, and other dignitaries joined U.S. Ambassador Daniel L. Foote for the official commissioning of the Bangweulu Solar Project located in the Lusaka South Multi-Facility Economic Zone. Representing Zambia’s first utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) farm, the Bangweulu project was developed by Neoen and First Solar, a French-American Independent Power Producer consortium, under the management of Zambia’s Industrial Development Corporation and in partnership with the World Bank Group’s International Finance Corporation (IFC) Scaling Utility-Scale Solar Program (known as “Scaling Solar”).
On July 10, Power Africa, a U.S. Government-wide initiative coordinated by the United States Agency for International Development, signed a formal partnership with The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W). Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, B&W focuses on advanced energy and environmental technologies and services for power, industrial, and renewable markets.
Power Africa Coordinator Andrew M. Herscowitz will travel to Ohio and Michigan with a U.S. Government Interagency team, from July 9 to 12, to visit a number of U.S. companies and facilities, many of which are current Power Africa partners.
