ENERGY SECTOR OVERVIEW

Chad’s ability to achieve increased energy access and poverty reduction is constrained by significant challenges in the power sector. It currently only has about 125 MW of installed generation capacity to serve a population of 14.5 million people. As a result, Chad’s government is working to expand its electricity supply and encourage investment in the energy sector to stimulate the economy. Chad is endowed with the tenth-largest oil reserves in Africa, as well as wind and solar resource potential. The majority of its existing capacity comes from diesel and HFO generation. Chad has one distribution and retail utility company: Societe National d'Electricite. There are not yet any independent power producers (IPPs) involved in electricity production.

POWER AFRICA’S ENGAGEMENT IN CHAD

MW GENERATION

Power Africa has engaged on two solar projects in Chad through official private sector partners, as well as the African Development Bank. This support is meant to accelerate the financial close of these two projects, which would add 70 MW to Chad’s installed capacity.

CONNECTIONS

Since 2013, Power Africa has facilitated 60 connections through solar lanterns. This support, achieved through partnerships with off-grid companies, support’s the government’s strategy of increasing rural access.
