The United States government shares the Philippine government’s vision for a healthier and more prosperous country. We commend the Philippine government, and the Department of Health, for their unwavering commitment to combat this disease. By eradicating TB and attaining a healthy population, the Philippines will be better positioned to advance into an upper-middle income country and achieve its development goals under Ambisyon Natin 2040.

USAID works to improve innovative health technologies and patient-centered approaches to care, and advance diagnostic and treatment options. Since 2007, USAID has provided nearly $80 million to support the Philippine Department of Health’s National Tuberculosis Control Program.

It is my pleasure to join you all today as we celebrate one of the milestones of USAID’s work here in Mindanao, which we have achieved through our Biodiversity and Watersheds Improved for Stronger Economy and Ecosystem Resilience (B+WISER) project. I would like to thank our partners from the Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the local government of Bukidnon, the indigenous peoples of Mt. Kitanglad and other NGOs for their dedication and hard work that has strengthened and expanded conservation in this region.

Since USAID’s Mindanao Youth for Development project, more commonly known simply as MYDev, started in 2013, we have seen the commitment and dedication of everyone in this room to improve the future of at-risk, vulnerable, out-of-school youth in your communities.

USAID has a long history of partnering with the Department of Health to ensure that all Filipinos can enjoy the quality health services that they need. To promote this shared goal, USAID and the Department of Health are embarking on a new partnership to build the capacity of the Filipino health workforce workers to respond to the country’s priority health needs. We are investing in the health workforce because strong and capable human resources for health improve health outcomes and save lives.

Having access to power leads to a better quality of life for citizens. When communities have a reliable power supply, it means they are more attractive to economic investments, streets are safer, children read in the evenings with their families, health facilities can provide continuous services, and many other benefits. But extreme weather and other natural disasters can disable the energy grids that connect producers to energy consumers. Around the world, and here in the Philippines, USAID invests in energy systems that can power inclusive economic and social development.

Today’s launch of the Philippine pangolin research study is a fitting way to celebrate World Wildlife Day and the recently observed World Pangolin Day.
At USAID, we believe that conservation of our world’s natural resources is development. Similarly, combating wildlife trafficking is an international development issue because it fosters security and promotes rule of law. Drawing from decades of conservation work, USAID believes that responsible stewardship of our natural resources, including wildlife, is critical pursuing a sustainable path to development that enriches natural capital instead of depleting it.

USAID is proud to partner with NATRIPAL, through the Philippine-American Fund, to strengthen your role in biodiversity conservation and environmental governance.
Biodiversity conservation and the well-being of indigenous peoples are closely intertwined. USAID engages closely with local communities to manage biodiversity in their own ancestral domains, which are often also protected areas. These efforts have resulted in more innovative, sustained and cost-effective ways to protect biodiversity.
