USAID programs help countries resist Russia’s manipulation of their information sources, journalism, and overall public discourse by bolstering the capacity of their news outlets to provide professional, trusted coverage… and to strengthen the legal and regulatory operating environment for press freedom. Our support for independent media restores the power of truth to the people and away from malign foreign actors.

This National Religious Freedom Day, we take the opportunity to celebrate America's first freedom.  A desire for religious freedom is what brought Americans to Plymouth's shores, which makes it a foundational value in the United States' Journey to Self-Reliance.  One expression of religious freedom in the United States is the legacy of faith-based organizations and their enduring contributions to stability, peace, and prosperity here at home and around the world.

Statement

Today, as we mark ten years since the devastating earthquake that hit the country on January 12, 2010, the United States sends our condolences to the people of the Republic of Haïti and commends their enduring commitment to building a stronger nation. We remember the hundreds of thousands who were killed, and stand in solidarity with those whose lives were forever changed that day.  We salute the determination of the Haitian people, who responded with courage in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake--digging through tons of rubble to save their neighbors--and continue to strive every day to improve their lives.

Remarks

History tells us that states with more democratic characteristics are usually more prosperous, stable, and reliable partners. They're better economic partners, because they possess the characteristics and conditions that we believe are vital for economic vibrancy and sustainable growth. They're better strategic partners because they're citizen-centered, making them less likely to produce terrorists, proliferate weapons of mass destruction or engage in armed aggression. Conversely, authoritarian regimes are, at best, unreliable partners and, at worst, pose significant risks to peace and stability.

January 6, 2020

On behalf of the United States Agency for International Development, I extend my congratulations to Interim President Guaidó upon his re-election as President of the National Assembly, the only legitimate and democratically elected government institution in Venezuela. This re-election is a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of the people of Venezuela, Interim President Guaidó, and members of the National Assembly, in the face of the illegitimate Maduro regime's unrelenting deployment of bribes, blackmail, threats, and persecution to undermine the democratic process and attempt to deny Venezuelans their right to vote. In spite of continual harassment, the National Assembly remains a beacon of hope for all Venezuelans, and we salute the parliamentarians for their steadfast commitment to democracy.

December 16, 2019
Remarks

As neighbors, we all realize that communities across the Caribbean are still coping with the aftermath of Irma and Maria. In the Bahamas, we all know that residents still face a lengthy recovery from Hurricane Dorian. It's reasonable to hope that storms of this intensity never strike again. But it's also reasonable and prudent to plan as though they will. Through these investments, USAID is committed to helping our partners across the Caribbean prepare for the worst and avert disasters before they occur. We are proud to work with all of you. We are impressed with the leadership and many accomplishments. And while we know that challenges loom for all of us ahead, what I have seen today in the conversations that we have had fill me with optimism. I know that we continue to improve our capabilities to learn from the past and to build a brighter future.
