On June 12, 2018, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Interfruit LLC, a Kyrgyz-Tajik joint venture, inaugurated a new fruit processing facility in Uch Korgon rayon of Batken Oblast. USAID co-financed new drying, processing and packaging equipment that will enable the facility to process apricot, apple, peach, cherry, rose hips, apple, plum, prunes, and walnuts. The new facility is expected to employ 50 full-time workers year-round.
On June 5-6, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) hosted an Agriculture Trade and Investment Forum, bringing together around 200 international and domestic investors, buyers and agribusinesses. The forum featured business-to-business meetings, discussions, presentations and product exhibitions designed to link Kyrgyzstani producers with produce buyers, and to generate investor interest in agriculture.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is installing 125 new road signs and street maps to improve the tourism experience in Kyrgyzstan. The tourist signs will help visitors to navigate through cities and trekking routes, and show directions to major tourist attractions. This initiative is a part of USAID’s Business Growth Initiative project, which works to strengthen the tourism sector in the country.
On March 30, 2018, representatives of municipalities, state officials, and representatives of international organizations will convene at the Forum of Aimaks in Bishkek to discuss challenges and strategies to improve regional development in the Kyrgyz Republic.
Each year, we recognize World Tuberculosis Day on March 24. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) works with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic to fight this deadly infectious disease. Following a new roadmap on improving prevention and treatment of tuberculosis (TB) developed with USAID’s support, the Kyrgyz Republic is adopting new treatment models, modernizing the health system, and providing new incentives for doctors.
Fifteen Kyrgyzstani tour operators participated in Kyrgyzstan’s exhibition at ITB in Berlin, one of the world’s largest travel and tourism fair from March 7-11, 2018. More than 10,000 companies and organizations from 186 countries and regions exhibited their products to trade visitors and consumers over the five-day event. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) assisted the delegation in organizing Kyrgyzstan’s exhibition space as part of its efforts to promote tourism in the country.
More than 230 early grade students from two schools in Naryn and Kochkor district and their parents are taking part in reading events organized with support from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). They will read books together, participate in contests and conduct theatrical performances based on the works of Chyngyz Aitmatov. The events help improve reading skills of students and emphasize the importance of parents’ role in fostering children’s interest in reading and love of books.
In light of International Women’s Day, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is organizing a special event to highlight the successes of women in agriculture. During the event, successful women agricultural producers in Batken, Jalal-Abad, Naryn, and Osh will share their stories. These women work with USAID’s Agro Horizon project, which, among other initiatives, supports women entrepreneurship in the Kyrgyz Republic.
Over the last year, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) facilitated more than $6 million in exports for local Kyrgyz businesses in the garment industry and agricultural sectors.
