Last week, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, launched three water and sanitation (WASH) projects in Kenya. The events were presided over by the Deputy Assistant Administrator in the Bureau for Economic Growth, Education and Environment and Acting Global Water Coordinator James Peters and USAID’s Mission Director for Kenya and East Africa Tina Dooley-Jones.
I am pleased to be here today. Congratulations members of the 12th parliament on your election and nomination to serve the people of Kenya. This is something to be proud of -- public service is a great honor and responsibility. At USAID, we have been pleased to partner with Kenya Women Parliamentary Association -- KEWOPA -- an organization committed to empowering women to reach their political potential, no matter which party they belong too. Women’s participation, after all, is not a partisan issue.
Power Africa, a U.S. Government initiative to double electricity access in sub-Saharan Africa, today launched the Guide to Community Engagement for Power Projects in Kenya. The Guide outlines how electricity producers can best engage with electricity consumers.
I am excited to join all of you at this conference. Having traveled to many parts of this beautiful country, what I have seen over and over again is that agriculture is not just an important sector for the economy, but instrumental to Kenya's achievement of its Vision 2030 goals. Food is a key outcome of agricultural activities, and, in turn, is a key input into nutrition. However, the availability of food from agriculture doesn't necessarily ensure good nutrition.
The value of Kenya’s high-elevation forests extends beyond their great beauty and geological diversity. The country depends on five major forest watersheds or “water towers” – Aberdares, Cherangani Hills, Mau Complex, Mt. Elgon and Mt. Kenya – for most of her water, energy and habitat that harbors rare and exotic species of plants and animals.
