Today, the United States Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is donating 14 new, modern ventilators to Mombasa, Kenya, to assist its fight against COVID-19. 

This is the latest handover of ventilators as part of the United States’ promised donation of 200 ventilators throughout Kenya. The 200 ventilators are all being given directly to hospitals in need of lifesaving equipment. Prior to receiving the ventilators, the United States provided training for medical personnel on how to properly use and store them. When complete, the donation will supply much needed aid to hospitals throughout the country to help Kenyans struggling with COVID-19.

Today in Turkana County, U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, Robert F. Godec opened the Lodwar Livestock Market, which was upgraded through 38 million Kenya Shilling (US $380,000) in funds from the U.S. government to improve the market’s infrastructure and water system. The improved structures and facilities will spur economic growth in the livestock industry and create wealth, employment and resilience within the community.

Today, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Amref Health Africa, together with the Governors of Marsabit and Samburu Counties, and the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs, launched a new approach to ending child marriage and eradicating Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) through partnership with clan elders and youth leaders.  The three-year “Koota Injena” (“Come let us talk”) project, made possible by a grant of Ksh372.5 million from the U.S. Government, will work with vulnerable girls who are at risk of child marriage and FGM in the Rendille, Borana, Gabra, and Samburu communities.

Vehicles donated by USAID to the Kenya Wildlife Service

U.S. Ambassador to Kenya Robert F. Godec joined Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Hon. Najib Balala in launching a fleet of 26 new vehicles donated to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The vehicles will support KWS in combating wildlife trafficking and poaching. Four additional vehicles will be purchased in the future.

Last week, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, launched three water and sanitation (WASH) projects in Kenya. The events were presided over by the Deputy Assistant Administrator in the Bureau for Economic Growth, Education and Environment and Acting Global Water Coordinator James Peters and USAID’s Mission Director for Kenya and East Africa Tina Dooley-Jones.

Power Africa, a U.S. Government initiative to double electricity access in sub-Saharan Africa, today launched the Guide to Community Engagement for Power Projects in Kenya. The Guide outlines how electricity producers can best engage with electricity consumers.

The Kenya Innovation Engine (KIE), a USAID-funded program Feed the Future initiative, honored entrepreneurs, investors, counties, and farming cooperatives who have participated in bringing 24 agricultural innovations to more than 202,000 smallholder farmers in 35 counties in Kenya.

USAID’s new Administrator Mark Green announced the United States continued commitment towards working with Kenya on food security with the selection of Kenya as one of 12 partner countries in the global hunger and food security initiative, Feed the Future. Countries were selected based on their need, their partnership with the United States and their commitment to investing effort and resources to tackle food insecurity and stunting.

Today the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) East Africa Trade and Investment Hub (the Hub) signed a grant with Generation Program Kenya Limited, a local subsidiary of the McKinsey Social Initiative, to create 2,000 full-time jobs and provide over 100,000 hours in skills development for young people in the apparel industry.

Isiolo Livestock Market Launch

Today in Isiolo County, the Mission Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Karen Freeman, joined representatives of the Government of Kenya and of Isiolo County to launch a new livestock market and water system.  The livestock market will benefit more than 18,000 pastoralists, including young people. USAID has built 12 markets in Isiolo and Marsabit Counties as part of a 350 million dollar effort to mitigate the impact of the current drought and increase community resilience.
