A fisher holding up his catch of the day
In Eastern Indonesia, home to some of the world’s most biodiverse marine ecosystems, USAID is ensuring the continuation of successful local conservation efforts — which have already seen a 90 percent drop in illegal fishing — through the creation of a permanent endowment.
USAID SEA for USAID Indonesia

Indonesia is the world’s largest Muslim-majority country and third largest democracy. As a member of the G20 and the biggest market in Southeast Asia, it is a significant player in the global economy. Indonesia’s embrace of democracy, promotion of tolerance, and steady economic growth are critical to regional security and global trade.

Indonesia has emerged as a regional leader whose democracy, prosperity, and continued stability are of global importance. Committed to solving critical development challenges that impede progress, Indonesia is forging ahead to realize its vision for self-reliance. By partnering with the Government of Indonesia, the U.S. Government, through USAID, advances shared economic and security interests to reinforce an advanced, just, prosperous, and self-reliant Indonesia.

Through results-driven investment, USAID works with the Government of Indonesia, local leaders, the private sector, civil society and other development partners to strengthen democratic governance, environmental sustainability, economic growth, and health—while responding to public health and humanitarian crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

USAID partnerships strengthen key institutions critical for Indonesia’s stability and development. USAID programs combat corruption, help civil society to effectively advocate for citizens’ rights, and strengthen a civic culture of pluralism and tolerance—Indonesia’s founding values—amid a growing threat of violent extremism. In targeting the drivers of intolerance, USAID promotes human dignity and justice for all.

In workforce development, USAID supports Indonesian youth to realize their potential. Through partnerships with businesses, USAID advances inclusive economic growth while helping Indonesia to leverage digital technology to address development challenges and level the playing field for trade and investment..

USAID supports Indonesia to prevent and respond to public health crises, including COVID-19. USAID helps Indonesia turn the tide against epidemics like tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS and contain emerging pandemic threats. Our work helps more mothers deliver healthy babies and expands access to clean water, hygiene, and sanitation for those who need it most.

To ensure sustainable economic growth, USAID enhances Indonesia’s resilience to disasters and strengthens the management and protection of marine and terrestrial biodiversity. USAID improves access to safe drinking water and sanitation services for urban residents, strengthens urban disaster resilience, and leverages investment to deliver reliable and sustainable energy across the archipelago.
