USAID AWARDS $75 MILLION TO ACCELERATE REDUCTIONS IN MATERNAL, NEWBORN, AND CHILD DEATHS THROUGH PRIVATE HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS

On June 22, 2020, the U.S Agency for International Development (USAID) awarded MOMENTUM Private Healthcare Delivery. This is the fourth in a series of global health awards to accelerate reductions in maternal, newborn, and child mortality and morbidity in high-burden countries. This award, valued at up to $75 million, subject to annual appropriations, falls under the MOMENTUM suite of projects, which aim to increase the capacity of host-government institutions and local non-governmental organizations to introduce, deliver, scale-up, and sustain the use of evidence-based, high-quality maternal, reproductive, newborn, and child health care and voluntary family planning.

This MOMENTUM award will focus on increasing the capacity of private providers to deliver evidence-based, quality maternal, newborn, and child health services and voluntary family planning and reproductive health care.

Private health care is one of the fastest growing segments of health care systems and private providers are an increasingly important source of care in low- and middle-income countries. Strengthening the capacity of these providers to deliver comprehensive and quality care is critical for increasing the availability and demand for care, which supports countries to progress on their Journey to Self Reliance.

This MOMENTUM award will diversify USAID’s partner base by creating avenues for new and underutilized partners, similar to the New Partnerships Initiative and in support of the Agency’s Private Sector Engagement Strategy.

By expanding local private sector partnerships and promoting a total market approach, health care coverage in high burden countries will be improved.

The project will be implemented by Population Services International (PSI) with Jhpiego, FHI 360, ThinkWell and Avenir Health.
