Ambassador Ross Wilson, Chargé d’Affaires a.i of the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi, spoke at the conference “The 2018 Presidential Election: Lessons Learned and Steps Ahead.” The Chargé stressed the importance of policy reforms to level the electoral playing field ahead of the 2020 Parliamentary Elections in the interest of enhancing fair electoral competition and democratic pluralism in Georgia.
USAID Georgia together with Anaklia Development Consortium, launched the Education Hub and micro-small-and medium-sized enterprise grants program. Strong partnership with the private sector has been designed to empower communities like Anaklia, which are so close to the Administrative Boundary Line with the Russian-occupied territories of Abkhazia, to achieve self-reliance and take full advantage of the development of Anaklia.
135 schools participated in the paper waste collection contest supported by USAID’s Waste Management Technologies in the Regions Project. 53 tons of paper waste was collected and given to local recycling companies.
This green initiative saved 370 trees and 160 cubic meters of landfill space in the country. It also saved energy and reduced greenhouse gas emissions that harm the environment. This is a great initiative and a good start that definitely should be further enhanced by encouraging others to do the same.
Lado Apkhazava from Georgia is one of the top ten finalists of the Global Teacher Prize. Lado is a civics teacher in Chibati village public school in remote western Georgia. He was the first winner of the National Teacher of the Year Award in 2017, for his promotion of greater civic engagement among young people.
USAID in partnership with the Georgian Famers’ Association and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, has developed “GeoGAP”, a crop-specific local GAP standard for Georgia. The new GeoGAP standard will allow farmers to prove incremental improvements in quality production before reaching for the standard of Global Good Agricultural Product (Global GAP) certification.
