The U.S. Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the State Department, is providing an additional $1.47 million to help Azerbaijan respond to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
U.S. Embassy, Suva Deputy Chief of Mission Antone Greubel travelled to Nadi International Airport on Monday, August 24 to meet a U.S. government-supported flight carrying critical supplies to help Pacific Island countries fight the COVID-19 pandemic. The flight also carries ten brand-new, state-of-the-art ventilators donated by the U.S. government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), to Kiribati, as part of President Trump’s commitment to provide ventilators to countries in need.
As in countries around the world, Bangladesh’s entire health system is heavily occupied in meeting the rising demand of health services for COVID-19 patients, and continuing to provide emergency medical services. There is also a decline in demand in seeking health care services from general patients, fearing exposure to COVID-19. The question remains—what should expectant mothers do in such a scenario? Do they still go to healthcare centers for their check-ups and deliveries?
Seventeen years ago today, 22 humanitarians died in a bombing in Baghdad. World Humanitarian Day commemorates their sacrifice and recognizes the courage of all humanitarians who risk their lives every day to help others. Unfortunately, attacks on humanitarians have only increased since last – since then. Last year was the most violent year on record with at least 483 aid workers that were killed, injured, or kidnapped. And in the last month alone, humanitarian staff working with USAID partners in Niger, South Sudan, Cameroon, and Nigeria lost their lives while helping people in need.
On August 19, World Humanitarian Day, we recognize the aid workers who put their lives on the line to help people affected by crises around the world. Since the deaths of 22 humanitarians in a Baghdad bombing 17 years ago, every year on this date, we pause to honor the brave women and men who risk everything to help those in need.
