On Monday, November 18, 2019, U.S. Ambassador Larry André introduced Mr. Lloyd Jackson as the new USAID Country Representative for Djibouti to the Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Government Spokesperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, in his first meeting as the new USAID representative to the country. Joined by USAID Ethiopia Mission Director Sean Jones, the delegation discussed priorities in strengthening U.S.-Djibouti partnership to improve health, education and economic growth opportunities for the people of Djibouti.
The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Bangladesh’s Counter Trafficking in Persons (BC/TIP) program, partnered with the Forensic Training Institute (FTI) of the Bangladesh Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to sponsor a five-day anti-trafficking in persons (TIP) investigation skills training. In collaboration with the FTI, the BC/TIP program developed a training curriculum on best practices for handling and investigating TIP cases and assisting trafficking victims in filing cases against perpetrators. This training is the third anti-human trafficking investigation course held since August of this year. Twenty-three police officers from 20 trafficking-prone districts actively participated in the classroom and scenario-based training held at the FTI in Dhaka and conducted by the BC/TIP program, which is funded by USAID and implemented by Winrock International, a U.S. non-governmental organization.
The United States, through USAID, is partnering with the Government of Bangladesh and the Bangladeshi private sector to help diversify Bangladesh’s economy and stimulate new streams of economic growth. USAID’s Comprehensive Private Sector Assessment (PSA) identified agribusiness (food processing), health care, information and communications technology and outsourcing, light engineering, pharmaceuticals, and tourism as some of the most promising industries beyond the ready-made garments (RMG) sector for private sector engagement and investment.
USAID/Bangladesh, through the Feed the Future Bangladesh Rice and Diversified Crops (RDC) activity, has developed a business model in partnership with U.S. and Bangladesh private companies to ensure farmers’ access to high-yielding Pioneer USA hybrid maize and rice seeds. In Bangladesh, the government typically controls much of the research, release, and sale of seed, which hampers innovation and access to premier seeds. Tackling this challenge, the USAID-funded activity partnered with a U.S. agricultural company, Corteva Agriscience (which markets Pioneer brand seeds) in late 2019, through their Bangladeshi agent, Petrochem Group (PCL).
