On December 5, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) launched its “Clean Cities, Blue Ocean” (CCBO) program in Sri Lanka and Maldives, the most recent countries to join this flagship initiative to mitigate ocean plastic. CCBO is a $48 million, five-year global initiative that helps countries improve solid waste management (SWM) and reduce, reuse, and recycle plastics (3Rs) in places that are at the heart of the global plastic pollution crisis, particularly in riverine and coastal areas.

The U.S. Government is helping make Arugam Bay a sustainable, green tourist destination. Through an initiative called “Waste Less Arugam Bay,” sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the project provides free drinking water at refill stations, recycles plastic bottles, and promotes the benefits of reducing plastic waste. In Arugam Bay alone, since April 2018, more than 230,000 bottles have been mitigated from entering landfills or the ocean. The website www.getwater.lk details the 35 locations of water refill stations across Sri Lanka.
It is a great pleasure to be here at the launch of the youlead.lk portal. Any day we can support initiatives that contribute to the education, health, and employment of youth, be it in Sri Lanka or elsewhere in the world, is a good day. Young people are critical to global stability, economic growth, and development of today - and for the future. Recognizing youth participation as vital to development, USAID partners with the private sector, national governments, youth, and civil society across the world to build the capacity and empower the next generation of leaders.
Today, I am particularly proud to celebrate the launch of Youlead.lk - a web portal that for the first time gathers all the elements young job-seekers and entrepreneurs need from career development, to job-matching, from access to finance, e-learning, and mentoring, in one place. What is significant about Youlead.lk is that it is not just a platform. It is an ecosystem. An ecosystem that will grow and expand as more and more youth add to it and become part of the community, providing leverage to their ventures and ideas.
This is an overview of some of the most significant milestones the American people have supported through USAID in Sri Lanka, during the second quarter of 2018. We hope that these demonstrate the diversity and the scope of USAID-supported activities in Sri Lanka and recognize stakeholder efforts that made all this possible.
