As USAID Southern Africa’s Mission Director, I am excited about the new five-year bilateral grant agreement, the Development Objective Agreement - also known as the DOAG. This agreement provides the framework for USAID’s funding of activities in Eswatini.  The majority of USAID’s work in Eswatini focuses on the multi-sector HIV response and is funded through the United States’ President’s Emergency Plan for HIV/AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

USAID Southern Africa represented the U.S. Government in national events in both South Africa and Namibia for World Tuberculosis (TB) Day 2019. John Groarke, USAID Southern Africa Mission Director, participated in the South African national event held in East London, South Africa on March 28th, and Randy Kolstad, USAID Namibia Country Representative participated in the Namibian national event held at Oshakati in the Oshana region on March 28, 2019.

Good morning/ Sanibonani and thank you for the opportunity to participate in today’s event. It is a great honor to be here on behalf of the United States Government to bring our message of support and hope about tuberculosis control- a key priority for us all.  For those who joined last year’s commemoration, you remember the theme called upon leaders to work towards a TB-free world. I was glad to be there with His Majesty, King Zwelithini to hear from Deputy President Mabuza, who acknowledged the essential role of traditional leaders in ending TB among their communities.

On February 14, 2018, U.S. Ambassador Lisa Johnson addressed the participants of the Regional Judiciary and Prosecutor Workshop at the Protea Hotel Fuerstenhof in Windhoek. Sponsored by the Combating Wildlife Crime (CWC) in Namibia and the Kavango-Zambezi (KAZA) Area program, which is funded by the U.S. Government through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the workshop was hosted by program implementers, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Namibia and TRAFFIC in collaboration with the Kavango-Zambezi (KAZA) Secretariat.
