Let me start by thanking our hosts from the Government of Zambia, specifically the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry as well as ZAMACE by helping putting this together, as well as any other agencies that have helped make this seminar not only stimulating, but also productive and enjoyable.
U.S. based company, INTL FCStone hosted a landmark seminar that addressed challenges with regional commodities trading and outlined a viable roadmap to strengthen Africa’s ability to trade and drive economic growth. The seminar was made possible through a Public Private Partnership with INTL FCStone and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Good afternoon and thank you for the opportunity to brief you on the U.S. PEPFAR - President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief - program in Namibia.
Our purpose today is to provide our media partners with information to enhance your understanding of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Namibia and the efforts underway to address it. PEPFAR is the U.S. government’s response to the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. The program is the largest commitment in history by any nation to address a single disease.
The U.S. Embassy in Pretoria, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and Business leadership South Africa (BLSA) announced a three-year extension of their ground-breaking development partnership, the Beyond Advocacy Fund, with an infusion of an additional $3.6 million in funding. This partnership tackles some of the most pressing socio-economic challenges in South Africa, such as youth unemployment, access to education, and the promotion of small business development.
Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary, Matthew T. Harrington accompanied by USAID/Southern Africa Mission Director, John Groarke visited the Wits Reproductive Health Institute (WRHI) that is supported by both USAID and CDC under PEPFAR program. WRHI is a unique institution that focuses on HIV, sexual and reproductive health and vaccine preventable diseases.
