Ten hotels and tour operators from the Kyrgyz Republic promoted their services at the 23rd Tashkent International Tourism Fair from October 3-5. The trip was organized with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). A Kyrgyz yurt, traditional music, and a handicrafts exhibition allowed visitors to get a glimpse of Kyrgyzstan as a tourism destination. The delegation met with hundreds of Uzbekistani tour operators and signed 141 partnership agreements.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) assisted fifteen women farmers from mountainous areas of Osh and Naryn Oblasts to launch greenhouse vegetable production. In 1800 m2 of greenhouses they plan to grow cucumbers and tomatoes to sell during the off-season. These partnerships promote women’s entrepreneurship in agriculture and provides much needed additional income while also improving nutrition by making vegetables easily available to households in the community during times when access to vegetables is scarce.
From September 18-21, Kyrgyz apparel factories participated in the Apparel Sourcing Paris exposition for the first time, one of the largest international textile industry events. The trip was sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as part of its effort to expand export markets for Kyrgyzstan’s garment industry.
On September 29, 2017, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will organize a forum to discuss capacity development and enhancement of service delivery for local government bodies in the Kyrgyz Republic. Over 120 representatives of municipalities, local councils and civil society organizations from Jalal-Abad, Issyk-Kul, Osh, and Naryn provinces, national government, and international organizations will come together to share best practices and lessons learned.
On September 15, Alan Meltzer, Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy, handed over 13,560 Kyrgyz language books to eight public libraries in Talas oblast. Each public library received a set of 1,695 books featuring tales, stories, riddles, and poetry for young readers. The books were donated under USAID’s Reading Together project, which works to improve reading skills for students in early grades.
