The United States donated a mobile testing unit to the Regional Health Services in Moneragala, received by Dr. B.M.C. Dasanayaka, as part of the effort to fight COVID-19 in Sri Lanka and protect lives through early detection.
December 10, 2020: The United States launched a new LKR 3.6 billion (USD 19.5 million) initiative to help small businesses and economically empower Sri Lankan women. The Private Sector Development Project, which is funded through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), will provide technical assistance and financing to small businesses in the tourism, technology, and commercial care industries.
The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the global and local economic trajectory. As Sri Lanka’s economy seeks to emerge stronger out of this pandemic, an emphasis will need to be placed on supporting exports, which demonstrated an initial recovery in the June-August 2020 period. In this light and with the reopening of the economy post May, it is important to understand the firm level perspective from exporters on how they are now confronting and overcoming the challenges posed by COVID-19 and their perspective on the future direction of exports, labour and the economy. This report is the second in an assessment of the impact of COVID-19 on Sri Lankan Exporters conducted by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the USAID/PARTNER (Partnership for Accelerating Results in Trade, National Expenditure and Revenue) Activity.
The United States Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has donated 200 brand-new, state-of-the-art ventilators to Sri Lanka, delivering on President Trump’s offer of critically needed supplies and supporting Sri Lanka’s fight against COVID-19. The ventilators were handed over to Sri Lanka’s Minister of Health Hon. Pavithra Wanniarachchi by the U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives, Alaina Teplitz.
Top Gem Lapidary is a women-led enterprise started by eight previously unemployed youth from Central Sri Lanka. The launch of this enterprise highlights the importance of increasing youth employment and entrepreneurship through a systemic, market-led approach. That was the concept behind USAID’s design for the Youth Employment and Business Start-up (YouLead) project. The launch and enterprise training of this women-owned startup is the culmination of the process by which the USAID-funded YouLead project facilitates and supports youth employment.
