Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, tensions at the border have been high. In Voruh, a predominantly Tajik-populated village located on the Kyrgyz side in Batken, three violent conflicts have taken place in 2019 alone. The most recent incident in July led to one death and seventeen hospitalizations. Given the frequency of such clashes, both countries frequently publish one-sided, controversial stories. Tajik and Kyrgyz journalists rarely report perspectives from the other side and usually cite sources only from their respective countries, including some government sources.
USAID Competitiveness, Trade and Jobs activity in Central Asia (CTJ) facilitates trade and employment in horticulture, tourism, transport and logistics across the five Central Asian economies. By incentivizing firms to become more regionally competitive and by addressing cross-border impediments to trade, USAID helps to develop a more diverse and competitive private sector and generate export-driven growth.
Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)’s Smart Waters program, implemented by Central Asia Regional Environmental Center (CAREC), in cooperation with the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) handed over a 170,000 USD dredger to the State Committee on Water Management in Tashkopri, the south-east settlement of Mary province, Turkmenistan.
By partnering with the countries of Central Asia, international donor agencies, and the private sector, USAID helps support a long-term, sustainable vision of the region’s energy sector. As the region pursues improvements to energy infrastructure and institutions, more robust integration of the region’s energy markets, and economic growth based on energy trading, USAID’s assistance is helping to realize this important vision. The U.S. will also bring the power of the American private sector to develop a cost-effective, reliable and least-cost electricity system.
USAID and the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population officially launched two new projects:
A five-year - USAID Eliminating Tuberculosis in Central Asia (ETICA) Activity and a grant awarded to the World Health Organization (WHO) to “Improved Prevention, Detection, and Treatment of DR-TB in Central Asia.”
