Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, tourism was one of the fastest-growing sectors globally. Recognizing the unique heritage and availability of unspoiled landscapes, the governments of Central Asia identified tourism as a sector to develop and have been facilitating investment in hotels and transport.
The Republic of Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Public Education (MPE) is embarking on a complete reform of the education sector. The MPE, which has responsibility for primary and general secondary education, has requested USAID’s assistance to support and advise those reform efforts in creating a more effective and transparent basic education system. USAID is providing national level surveys, the Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) and Early Grade Math Assessment (EGMA). These comprehensive and effective assessment tools have been applied in over forty countries and in a host of languages.
The Fergana region of Uzbekistan, with its favorable conditions for agriculture, is famous for its production of delicious fruits and vegetables. Forty-five-year-old Olim (name changed) is one of several millions of seasonal farm workers in the Fergana region. He supports a family of three children and a spouse on his modest income.
Across the globe, many tuberculosis (TB) patients who start treatment, do not complete the course. This has given rise to multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), a form of TB infection caused by bacteria resistant to at least two first-line anti-TB medications, which is very difficult and expensive to treat.
Nasiba (name changed) is from the small town of Yakkabag in the Kashkadarya region of Uzbekistan. Nasiba married for the second time while pregnant with a child from her first marriage. After the wedding, the couple settled down in Bukhara where their daughter Charos was born a few months later. Nasiba’s new husband gave Charos his last name and raised her as his own.
