Gulnara’s* problems began when her husband abandoned her, forcing her to care for her 12-year-old daughter alone in Azerbaijan. As a single mother with no more than a high school diploma, she was only able to find occasional work as a house cleaner.
In Azerbaijan, men make up the vast majority of agricultural entrepreneurs. And while most agribusiness managers are male, those engaged in the field and post-harvest work, which accounts for most of the jobs in the sector, are predominantly female. Fortunately, as the agricultural sector grows, new opportunities are opening up for women.
