On January 29, USAID partner International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) signed an agreement with five pilot universities in Armenia to launch the “Engaged Citizen” civic education program. The program was developed under the framework of USAID’s “Strengthening Electoral Processes and Political Accountability” project, which aims to promote broader citizen engagement in elections and political processes.

On January 18, Prime Minister (PM) Nikol Pashinyan visited CARD, a USAID legacy organization that was initially established as a farm extension program with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1992.  In 2005, CARD became an independent, local agribusiness organization that supports farmers and agribusinesses in the production and marketing of food and related products.

On November 26, the Government of Armenia approved new laws stipulating amendments to the national Water Code. The new laws will improve protection of water resources in recreation zones by requiring proper management of activities that may negatively impact the environment and water ecosystems, for example, restaurants that discharge water in recreational zones. The new laws also enforce stricter repercussions to violations to the code.

On November 21, U.S. Embassy Chargé d'Affaires Rafik Mansour and USAID/Armenia Mission Director Deborah Grieser met with Chairman of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of Armenia Tigran Mukuchyan. The parties discussed U.S. assistance and collaboration with the Government of Armenia ahead of the December 9 parliamentary elections, including the September 2018 signing of an $8 million, four-year agreement to support the integrity of Armenian elections.
