Albania has the smallest number of doctors per capita in the Balkan region - 1.2 doctors per 1000 persons, and 3.6 midwives / nurses per 1000, a situation is further exacerbated by the continued migration of the country’s medical professionals to other EU countries, especially Germany, for work. The lack of medical staff is felt most in remote mountainous areas of western Albania with poor roads and infrastructure.

USAID partner Tetra Tech and staff from the south-central Albanian municipality of Berat and the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) finalized technical design documents for the reconstruction of the Mbreshtani Irrigation and Drainage Canal. The project is expected to directly benefit over one thousand residents from five villages in Berat by repairing 12.9 kilometers of canals that serve over 252 hectares of arable land used to grow crops.

Albania's Prime Minister signed the National Energy Sector Strategy 2017-2030 that calls for the regional integration and diversification of the sector and is designed to provide consumers with a stable, reliable and affordable energy supply.

TIRANA, ALBANIA     On July 9, the USAID Transparency in Health Engagement Project (THE), in collaboration with the Albanian Supreme Audit Institution, the High Inspectorate for the Declaration and Audit of Assets and Conflicts of Interest, and the Office of the Ombudsperson, organized an inter-institutional workshop on strengthening the role of watchdog institutions in monitoring corruption in Albania’s health sector.
