FOOD SECURITY

Through the Feed the Future Initiative, USAID provides technical support and training to strengthen the impact of African Union’s Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Plan (CAADP). Our programs also fortify Africa-owned agriculture development plans at the country, regional and continental level. We are committed to expanding the number of experienced professionals in African organizations – government, non-government and private – with the mindsets, skills and technical expertise to assume leadership roles in moving the CAADP forward.

ENERGY

We partner to support and accelerate development of geothermal energy in the 11-country African Rift Valley Region. We provide technical assistance to African Union Commission staff as they promote the importance and benefits of attracting private sector investment to the region.

HEALTH

We support the AU's Campaign for the Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa program. With joint USAID-DFID assistance, an online portal was finalized in 2014 to track indicators in the areas of maternal and child health in all member states. The portal "africanhealthstats.org" was publicly launched in November 2014 and has been instrumental in the creation of the AU's Maternal Newborn and Child Health status report.

TRADE

We supported the development of an Implementation Strategy for Boosting Intra-Africa Trade (BIAT) and for partners to adopt the necessary measures towards effective implementation of BIAT. USAID support also enabled more political commitment to launch the Continental Free Trade Area negotiations. We also collaborate on the development of private sector partnerships to boost entrepreneurship in agribusiness, including technical and vocational model centers.

WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT

We partner with the African Union to support mainstreaming gender policies that improve gender equality, women peace & security and women’s empowerment.

YOUTH

We promote partnerships on Youth, Vocational Education, and Higher Education and assist the African Union in its efforts to mainstream the participation of youth throughout all of its activities and enhance their contribution to development priorities. Our efforts have also contributed to workforce development throughout the continent to respond to youth unemployment and contribute to the prosperity of future generations of Africans.
