The Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) designated Balkh University as financially autonomous for the first time in the history of the university. Balkh University is now authorized to benefit from the financial autonomy bylaw that allows designated public universities to generate and manage revenue from its professional and academic services. The university will also be able to use the generated revenues from professional and academic services for the expansion and development of the university and its educational programs, including research and innovation.
Kabul and Balkh Universities introduced Bachelor of Communications Degree programs in their faculties of Journalism and Communications. Both universities worked jointly to develop the program. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) funded the degree program through the University Support and Workforce Development Program (USWDP) while its U.S.-based partner, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, provided resources and materials from their own communications program to coach and mentor university staff during the design.
The U.S. government’s Promote: Women in Government (WIG) project, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), launched the “Professionalism in the Workplace” e-Learning video. The video will serve as a standard training tool for government workers who are responsible for workplace gender equality, professional communication, and anti-harassment. Promote works closely with Government of Afghanistan counterparts to cultivate a conducive-work environment for female civil service workers.
The U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan, John R. Bass, has announced support to an additional 10 municipalities in Afghanistan. This brings the total support by the U.S. government to 30 under its Strong Hubs for Afghan Hope and Resilience (SHAHAR) project. SHAHAR works to improve transparency and accountability in partner municipalities. Ambassador Bass spoke at the closing ceremony of the Third National Mayors Conference, sponsored by the Independent Directorate of Local Governance, with the support of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
Balkh University hosted an official graduation ceremony recognizing the first cohort of 27 Master of Finance and Accounting (MFA) students. The MFA program was established with financial assistance from USAID’s University Support and Workforce Development Program (USWDP), and technical expertise provided by the United States-based University of Notre Dame.
The U.S. Government’s Women in Government (WIG) and Women’s Leadership Development (WLD) projects, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), jointly hosted a graduation ceremony to celebrate the completion of a one-year civil service internship program by 300 female interns. The interns received government-issued certificates, equivalent to a year-long work experience, which will qualify them to apply for entry-level jobs in government.
The second annual “Passage to Prosperity: India-Afghanistan International Trade and Investment Show” successfully closed in Mumbai on September 15, 2018—with more than 2,000 buyers, sellers, investors, and visitors in attendance. The Governments of India, Afghanistan, and the United States—through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), facilitated the event recognized as one of the largest events in Mumbai this year. The show marked the strengthening of economic and investment ties between Afghanistan and other international markets and facilitated partnerships through business-to-business matchmaking, joint-venture opportunities, and consumer sales.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) contributed approximately $44 million to the UN World Food Programme (WFP) to support the provision of critical food assistance to people affected by drought in Afghanistan. Afghanistan is currently facing the worst drought in decades, affecting 20 of the country’s 34 provinces.
Female primary and secondary teachers throughout Afghanistan are enrolling in a teacher preparedness training course that was announced in Kabul. Targeting 2,500 teachers already contracted by the Ministry of Education (MoE), the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Women in the Economy (WIE) program and the MoE developed the 96 hour course to benefit female public school teachers by sharpening their classroom management skills and coaching them to deliver lessons using a more interactive teaching approach designed to better engage students.
