Ms. Kim Anh, a recent graduate of Hanoi Medical University’s (HMU) International Master of Public Health (MPH) Program, is poised for leadership in global public health. The international MPH program, the first of its kind in Vietnam, has been supported by USAID in partnership with the Vietnam One Health University Network. Kim Anh, along with students from Asia and Africa, has drawn on her public health training to support Vietnam’s successful response to COVID-19.
Born into a family of educators, Dr. Phan Thi Mai Ha dreamt of becoming a lecturer since she was a child. That dream came true in 2001 when she became a lecturer in the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. However, even though Ha was confident in her engineering expertise, she was off to a rocky start and struggled to prepare lessons where her students could learn both technical and soft skills. She recalls, “Starting my career, I brought plenty of insights from my field into my classes, but I had little training in pedagogy. I always doubted myself as an educator.”
The illegal wildlife trade in Vietnam is a major threat to endangered species worldwide. In the last decade, the country has seen a dramatic increase in the illegal trade and consumption of wildlife, particularly rhino horn and ivory from Africa. In response, the Vietnamese Government has made law enforcement an urgent priority. However, although Vietnam has strengthened its environmental laws, a lack of coordination between its enforcement agencies has undermined prosecutions.
Nguyen Nam Khanh is a two-year old boy who lives in Binh Phuoc province with his grandmother. When Khanh was eleven months old, his family noticed that his growth was stunted and he wasn’t moving around like other kids his age. So, his parents took him to the Children’s Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for a medical check-up. At the hospital, the doctor diagnosed Khanh with Cerebral Palsy and said that he needed long-term rehabilitation treatment.
